4 Tricks to Get More Email Opt Ins

Email marketing is still an incredibly effective marketing tool. Effective IF, and only if, you have contacts in your email marketing list. So how do you grow your email marketing list without buying a bunch of followers (which is a big no, no, expensive, and never very fruitful)? Today I'm going to share some of my secrets to get more email opt-ins.

Here are 4, easy-to-implement tricks to get more email opt ins:

Use a Pop-Up

Some people find these annoying, I know. I do too. But as long as the "x" option is clearly marked and I can get rid of it if I need to, it doesn't bother me that much. Turns out there is a reason.

One of my clients recently implemented an email sing up pop up, using SumoMe. In ONE day we saw our conversion rate go from 0.01% to an 8% conversion rate, in 24 hours. While it may be slightly annoying, I would argue that you won't lose a customer over it. (Especially if you follow trick number 4.)

Using a tool like Summo.me we can also A/B test when the pop-up comes up. We only have the pop up on our home page as that's where most of the traffic goes to and we test a delay of 4 seconds and 10 seconds.

Keep it Simple & Short

Create the path of least resistance. You get a headline, 140 characters or less and a form, make it good. I would make the headline be a bold statement clearly expressing the value, a sentence clarifying or reenforcing the value and then have a form consisting only of an email address.

Show Value

"Sign up for our newsletter!" -Don't do this. No one wants to sign up for a newsletter. Look at the pop up for OneKingsLane.com above. "Be the first to shop our top brands, designer-exclusives and curated friends."

Offer some kind of value, if you're a retailer, it would make sense to offer a discount code. "Join our mailing list and get 10% off your first order." Or even better, make it "Get 10% off when you order in the next 48 hours." That way, you get the sign up AND an order.

Make it Special

In addition to showing value, making subscribers feel like they're part of the "in" club helps. People love to be part of groups, it's in our nature. Being part of the insider crowd makes people feel special. Seriously.

How do you get more email opt ins? I'd love to add to this list!
