This morning, I checked my Facebook timeline and found this message from Mark Zuckerburg in my news feed:

One billion users!

A billion is a number I have a hard time wrapping my head around.  I have no idea what that looks like.

However, it's not surprising that one billion people are using Facebook.  Think about this: Facebook is probably referenced by every one you know at some point in a conversation at least once a day. That'd be an interesting statistic to find.  How many times do people reference (not physically use) Facebook a day? It's becoming a standard source for information, be it relevant or not.

The number "one billion," despite, Facebook's stock situation over the past year (see image to the left), is still not surprising. It is far and away the most accepted and used social media platform.

A little later on this morning while on Facebook, I came across this video, which appears to be an advertisement for Facebook:

I'm perplexed. By a couple of things. First off, I never thought I would see a video advertisement for Facebook.  While it totally makes sense, I was still surprised.

I'm further perplexed by the commercial itself.  It's almost as though the spot is trying to be like a piece of modern art (please note: I have no eye for modern art!)

The video caption reads, "We honor the everyday things that people make to get together and connect." There were definitely lost of everyday chairs as well as emotional background music.  No computers though and no Mark Zuckerburg.

It comes off as a feel-good commercial about Facebook expressing that Facebook is just like your everyday chair or doorbell used to bring people together.

The video also says that Facebook is a place for people to share ideas. Now, if they were to do another commercial I think they should stir it up a little and go with this "place to share ideas" bit.

Facebook IS a place where a BILLION people share ideas, good, bad, ugly, whatever.  Ideas like fundraising efforts or debate election opinions or news or informative links are shared.  It's a platform that acts as springboard for exchanging and sharing hundreds of informative tidbits.

I think another commercial emphasizing the whole knowledge is power manra would make for an awesome spot. That's a big part of what makes Facebook so great in my mind.  It's a place to gain knowledge and ultimately power. Not scary bad power, but power for good, for change.

I'm thinking the power message created with powerful images displayed rapidly over a popular energetic electric mixe in make you go "ooh" style that the Apple uses for their iPad commercials.

Okay, I realize I just took that a little too far.

My point is that, the first Faceobook commercial is a little disappointing in that it's just, well kind of ordinary.  Which I guess is the point, but as the biggest social media platform out there and now GROWING past a BILLION users, Facebook is not ordinary.  It's extraordinary. I would like to see a video that capitalizes on those users and the power Facebook is giving them.
